The mysterious object, which is only 4,000 light-years from Earth, is different than anything ever seen in space, astronomers have said.

They think it could be a neutron star or a white dwarf – collapsed star cores – with a very strong magnetic field, also known as a magnet. As it orbits the cosmos, a “spooky” object emits a beam of radiation, and every 20 minutes it is one of the brightest objects in the night sky.

Findings show that it releases a huge burst of energy three times an hour. Astrophysicist Dr. Natasha Hurley-Walker of Curtin University, the International Center for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) in Australia, led the group that made the discovery.

His team mapped out radio waves in the universe when they encountered a potential “magnetar.” He said: “This object appeared and disappeared within a few hours of our observations. ‘It was completely unexpected. It was kind of scary for an astronomer because nothing is known in the sky that would do that.

“And it’s really close to us – about 4,000 light-years away.” It’s in our galactic backyard. Dr. Hurley-Walker added that the findings correspond to a predicted astrophysical object called the “ultra-long-term magnet.” “It’s the kind of slow-rotating neutron star that’s predicted to exist in theory,” he said.

“But no one expected to directly perceive such because we didn’t expect them to be so bright. “Somehow it converts magnetic energy into a radio wave much more efficiently than anything we’ve seen.” Tyrone O’Doherty, a Curtin University Honors student, found the site using a Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) telescope in the hinterland of Western Australia.

He said: “It’s exciting that the source I found last year has turned out to be such a strange object. “The MWA’s wide field of view and extreme sensitivity are perfect for exploring the entire sky and detecting unexpected events.”

Objects that light up and go out in the universe are not new, and astronomers call them transient, and some of them appear within a few days and disappear after a few months, while others flash on and off in milliseconds or seconds. However, ICRAR-Curtin’s astrophysicist and co-author, Dr. Gemma Anderson, said the new discovery became unusual when something was discovered that only started for a minute.
