A brief history of headphones

Beginning – 1890

The headset started with the phone operators – It was one headset that rested on the user’s shoulder and weighed over 10 pounds.
Shortly thereafter came the Electrophone. Invented in the UK in the 1890s, this subscription service (£ 5 a year) allowed customers to call the exchange and connect to a live performance in London theaters. World-class stuff in the pre-radio world!

Navy – 1910

Engineer Nathaniel Baldwin invented the first pair of modern-style headphones at his kitchen table in 1910. The Navy ordered 100 pairs without knowing that Baldwin made them by hand.

Stereo – 1958

In 1958, John Koss rewrote the rulebook when he created the first stereo headphones, the Koss SP-3. The early models were just mini speakers covered in cardboard and sofa foam, but their impact was huge. Instead of settling for radio and aeronautical equipment, Jazz’s lover Koss came up with something purely for music – and he helped feed the revolution the way people listen to it.

Walkman – 1979

Sony made the headphones portable for the first time with its cassette player, the Walkman, which sold more than 400 million units. While it’s a thing of the past now, the way it creates – listening to music wherever and whenever you want – is greater than ever.

iPod / MP3 Players – 2001

After a minute of MP3 players, the invention of the iPod took portable digital music into the mainstream with its colorful commercials and skillful marketing. Hundreds of millions of ubiquitous white Apple wired in-ear headphones were suddenly everywhere.

Wireless headphones

The next big leap in the history of headphones is the evolution from

wired headphones to wireless headphones. The first wireless headphones came on the market in 2004, but they became more common in the 2010s as an alternative to the widespread wired headphones.

Fashion – 2008

Beats, UrbanEars, Skullcandy and many others turned their useful headphones into fashion with bright colors, great headphones and expensive price tags. Almost all the celebrities had a headphone band at some point, and some of them earned quite a penny for their purchases in space.

Social good – 2013

LSTN is launching and is the first headphone company to use the proceeds for social good. Since its inception, we have helped more than 30,000 people consult for the first time with our partnership with the nonprofit Starkey Hearing Foundation.
