A Robot Dog From Future

The first official semi-automatic robotic dogs were delivered to Tyndall Air Force Base on March 22 for integration into the 325th Security Forces.

Four-legged unmanned land vehicles, or Q-UGVs, are designed to increase the level of protection. Designed by Ghost Robotics and Immersive Wisdom, the robot dogs are the first of their kind to be integrated into a military installation. And one of the many innovation-based initiatives launched at Tyndall AFB created “Installation of the Future”.

“As a mobile sensor platform, Q-UGVs will significantly increase defenders’ situational awareness, ”says Mark Shackley, program manager for security forces at the Tyndall AFB Program Management Office. “They can patrol the base in remote areas, while defenders can continue to patrol and monitor other critical areas of the facility.”

Fututurestic Features

The features of robotic dogs allow easy navigation in difficult terrain. Robotic dogs can operate in minus 40 to 131-degree conditions and have 14 sensors to create 360-degree awareness. They also have a crooked space that lowers their center of gravity and a high step space that changes the movement of the legs.

Tyndall AFB’s Program Management Office, 325th SFS, 325th Civil Engineering Squadron, Air Force Research Laboratory, Communications, and other organizations have been working since July 2020 to ensure Q-UGVs are properly assembled before Tyndall AFB arrives. The installation is considered an ideal base for hosting new robotic dogs during the ongoing reconstruction.

The Facts

“Tyndall (AFB) is a complete test base because it was considered the‘ Future Installation, ’” said Master Sgt. Krystoffer Miller, 325. SFS operations, support the commander. “Throughout the base, each squadron has pushed an envelope of how we do things and expanded our optics of possibilities. One of the huge attractions of robotic dogs is that it is highly mobile and with the structures, we will face in the years to come, it will help us maintain and increase our safety position.”

This new technology has the potential to revolutionize the operation of basic security. Tyndall AFB is expected to set a benchmark for the other Department of Defense for Q-UGV use.

“I can say that there is definitely a lot of interest in the capabilities of the technology,” Miller said. “I hope other units see some success at Tyndall (AFB) and continue to explore the use of unusual tactics.”
